The 4 of us took a guided walking tour of the Garden Section. It was quite informative about architecture, history, cost of upkeep and why they did what they did.\u00a0 Laureen was most interested in which house was Sandra Bulluck’s, Nicholas Cage’s, and Ann Rice’s. ???? Now she can’t remember whose house is whose.<\/div>\n

The flowers and trees are all very fragrant because New Orleans is a smelly city with the river close by and the waterways throughout.<\/div>\n

This rose is called the Katrina Rose.\u00a0 The only plant to survive Hurricane Katrina.\u00a0 When the city started to get things cleaned up, they sold a cutting of this plant for $1 to the people to get their gardens going again.\u00a0 The money was used to help the city with clean-up costs.<\/div>\n

The oak trees are called “Live Oaks” because they stay green all year round.\u00a0 They are considered a National Tree and are under government protection.\u00a0 You cannot cut\/trim them unless they are broken in a storm, which doesn’t happen often.\u00a0 Their roots grow into the foundation of houses and under the roads, so the sidewalks very broken up and tricky to walk on. You have to support the limbs because they get so heavy.\u00a0 They are about 250 years old and when the limbs get too heavy for the tree they start to droop.\u00a0 When they reach the ground, the off shoots start to grow up and they start again.\u00a0 They offer shade, don’t need much water and smell wonderful.<\/div>\n
